HYATT REGENCY HOUSTON

The 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston

A Framework for Schooling: The State of the Black Manchild in Education Conference

Education continues to be the best opportunity for a fruitful and prosperous life for African American children and young adults. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nevertheless, as we move into the third decade of the 21st century, the promises of our school systems and colleges remain unfulfilled. African American students still lag in many of the significant indicators of success at the K-12 and higher education levels.

The A Framework for Schooling: The State of the Black Manchild in Education Conference will bring together K-12 educators, higher education professionals, community partners, parents, and concerned citizens in an outcomes-based environment to share data, dialogue, and exchange real-world, implementable solutions aimed at increasing success and completion for African American students in the K-16 education pipeline

Please join the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston on Friday, November 18 & Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the Hyatt Regency-Downtown Houston for this groundbreaking event.

The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. focuses its efforts and energies on improving the lives of youth in our community by pursuing the “Four for the Future” programs: (1) Mentoring (2) Health & Wellness (3) Education and (4) Economic Empowerment. The Metropolitan Houston Chapter has a rich history of programs that improve the community and positively affect economic development. Programs such as “Keeping Our Kids Out of the Criminal Justice Pipeline,” “Mentoring to Medicine,” The Next Chapter: A College Tour Experience, The Collegiate Leadership Forum, and various STEM-related programs and initiatives help our middle school, high school, and college-aged mentees develop to their fullest potential. Through our mentoring program, we have engaged and influenced thousands of young people and provided over 2,000 hours of mentoring.

CONFERENCE STRANDS

Data Strand

Understanding the landscape through empirical and experiential eyes is the first step in establishing a solutions-based stance in supporting African American students in the educational pipeline. This strand will arm conference participants with relevant and useful data needed to engage in the solutions development process.

Curriculum, Instruction, & Student Support Strand

Teaching and learning is the cornerstone of the educational process. This strand will focus on how we can use the sound, but creative curricula to engage students’ strengths, and how we adjust our teaching practices to support success for all students.

Leadership & Policy Making Strand

One of the primary roles of leaders in the education and policy space is to create and support an environment where students can thrive. In this strand, participants will engage in dialogue and conversations about how institution leaders and how policy is developed, and what can be done in this space to help increase student success.

Health and
Well-Being Strand

A student being ready and prepared to learn takes more than just showing up to class. Physical health, mental health, nutrition, and safety all have major influences on the learning process. In this strand, you will find topics related to these challenges and other influences.

Parent and Community
Engagement & Involvement Strand

A consistent question in education circles is how to get parents and community members involved and engaged in the education process. In this strand, conference participants will learn tips, strategies, and techniques to navigate the educational landscape to support their most precious assets.
